Ender's Shadow

Nero was in the same Launch group as Julian "Bean" Delphiki. He confronted Captain Dimak, who said that all the kids in the group had the same high scores, and some scored higher… an apparent contradiction Nero could not leave unchallenged. Bean had the same doubt, although he chose not to reveal it. Nero seemed to have become the one for the officer to “single out,” a tradition Dimak had started for shuttle launches since Ender Wiggin's time, but the argument soon turned against Bean instead. “Boulanger,” his last name, was French for “baker” and was made fun of by the officer as well, calling him “Nero Bakerboy.” His first name of Nero was also a source of ridicule for him, since Emperor Nero was generally remembered for being one of the more wretched Roman Emperors.[1]
